BACKGROUND
The Green Corridor Project
The Green Corridor Project is being implemented by the WWF and
the Thua Thien Hue Forest Protection Department of Vietnam. The
Green Corridor contains some of the largest blocks of lowland forest
in Vietnam, and provides a contiguous east to west stretch of forest
in Vietnam linking lowland coastal forests to highland forests on
the western border with Lao PDR. It traverses an area that stretches
from Phong Dien Nature Reserve and Bach Ma National Park, and is
adjacent to the Xe Sap BCA in Lao PDR. Many important forested areas
in Green Corridor lie outside formally gazetted protected areas. The
biodiversity action plan, which was prepared as an activity of
Vietnam’s pilot chase Global Environmental Facility (GEF) project,
assigns these remaining promary forests with the highest priority
for protective development due to their important biodiversity. The
Green Corridor project area covers approximately 134,000 ha of
Central Vietnam, and is comprised of all or parts of three
districts: A Luoi, Huong Thuy, and Nam Dong, and all or parts of
eleven communes. This project is part of ongoing cooperation between
the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the WWF
Greater Mekong Programme on conservation issues in the Thua Thien
Hue Province region.
Other Projects
The Green Corridor Project is also supported by a number of other
projects, which aim to conserve natural resources and species in
Thua Thien Hue Province.
Raising the Standard a Provincial Assessment of Gibbons
The US Fish and Wildlife Service support activities in tiger and
gibbon conservation in Hue through the Multinational Species
conservation project. Gibbon project surveys have been conducted to
identify key populations of these endangered species, this data will
be used to determine conservation priority areas in Hue. In
addition, a training course on awareness raising for commune Rangers
has been conducted which will enable conservation actions to be
communicated to local people.
Mitigating the impacts of the Ho Chi Minh highway
DANINA have funded the WWF Greater Mekong programme to look at the
mitigation of impacts of the Ho Chi Minh highway in Quang Nam, Thua
Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Kon Tum province. Training courses on
enforcement and land use mapping have been considered. In addition,
studies on erosions, socio-cultural impact assessement and
ecotourism feasibility study have been conducted and will be
disseminated in June 2006.
Earth Observation Support to Tradictional Ecological Mapping
(EOSTEM)
The EOSTEM project, funded by the Canadian Space Agency and
implemented by Hatfield Consultants Ltd with the Green Corridor
project and partners aims to look at the use of Earth Observation
data and improved mapping techniques to support forest conservation
and management in Hue province. To date, a revised forest map has
been made with support from National and Provincial FIPI and use of
the SPOT 5 satellite data system.
