The Green Corridor project is also supported by a number of other projects, which aim to conserve natural resources and species in Thua Thien Hue Province.

Raising the Standard a Provincial Assessment of Gibbons

ImageThe US Fish and Wildlife Service support activities in tiger and gibbon conservation in Hue through the Multinational Species conservation fund. These include tiger research in Phong Dien Nature Reserve and Bach Ma National Park, and the provincial-based gibbon conservation project. Gibbon project surveys have been conducted to identify key populations of these endangered species, this data will be used to determine conservation priority areas in Hue. In addition, a training course on awareness raising for commune Rangers has been conducted which will enable conservation actions to be communicated to local people.

Mitigating the impacts of the Ho Chi Minh highway

ImageDANIDA have funded the WWF Greater Mekong programme to look at the mitigation of impacts of the Ho Chi Minh highway in Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Kon Tum province. Training courses on enforcement and land use mapping have been considered. In addition, studies on erosions, socio-cultural impact assessment and ecotourism feasibility study have been conducted and will be disseminated in June 2006.

Earth Observation Support to Traditional Ecological Mapping (EOSTEM)

The EOSTEM project, funded by the Canadian Space Agency and implemented by Hatfield Consultants Ltd with the Green Corridor project and partners aims to look at the use of Earth Observation data and improved mapping techniques to support forest conservation and management in Hue province. To date, a revised forest map has been made with support from National and Provincial FIPI and use of the SPOT 5 satellite data system.
